$2000 fine for 12-year-old

The poor 12 year-old-girl that we reported on earlier this week has now been fined $2000 for her illegal MP3 downloads on Kazaa.

Brianna LaHara, from NYC, believed it was OK to download MP3’s as her mother had paid for Kazaa services. However, Mitch Bainwol from the RIAA didn’t see it that way and said in a statement:

“We’re trying to send a strong message that you are not anonymous when you participate in peer-to-peer file sharing and that the illegal distribution of copyrighted music has consequences. And as this case illustrates, parents need to be aware of what their children are doing on their computers.”

I’m still absolutely disgusted with their actions. Charging a mother with a 12-year-old child $2000 just because she accidentally downloaded some tunes is completely wrong. Not many mothers can afford $200, let alone $2000. Even US Senators say that the RIAA’s latest campaign to stop online piracy may not be best approach.
